Ok Punk! “Ugly (cover)”
I like this minor-key version more than the original, but that’s mostly because I go for punk over Pink most days. What I’m interested in is how the movement from rock-influenced pop to “Real Punk” (as the album’s cover proclaims) affects the message of the song itself. Does the song’s chorus gain more weight when it’s being sung from/for the margins, or is it more meaningful coming from accepted members of the mainstream? Does it matter that all of 2NE1 are women and only one member of Ok Punk! is? Who speaks for more people, a pop group or a punk group? Who speaks for the right people?
(Please note I’m referring to margins symbolically here, as Ok Punk! is not a scrappy basement band but a supergroup that includes actress Kim Okbin of Park Chan-wook’s Thirst, the lead singer of The Koxx, and one-half of Top Band winners Toxic.) (That said, they still come from a place outside of the K-pop industry - here’s a very telling gifset of two of the members backstage at a music show pulling faces while Rainbow Pixie walks by.)
